Badge Maxxing: Getting the Most Out of Your Assembly Show Experience

If you’ve been anywhere near a TV or radio lately, you’ve probably heard McDonald’s pushing their annual Monopoly game — this time with a new phrase: “Bag Maxxing.”

Translation: buy more food, get more game pieces, increase your odds.

That got me thinking… what if we took that same energy to The Assembly Show?

Introducing: Badge Maxxing — the art of squeezing every ounce of value out of your show experience.

Start Before You Step on the Show Floor

Most attendees walk into The Assembly Show ready to be dazzled by cordless this, ergonomic that, and more “best-in-class” claims than the annual J.D. Power Awards.

But if you walk in with knowledge, not just curiosity, you’ll see the solution, not just the shine.

Imagine walking those aisles already knowing what kind of tool will actually work for your application — or even improve your process, because you understand how rivets work.

That’s what our Positively Riveting training is all about: empowering you to ask the right questions before you get swept up by brand hype and booth lights.

Cordless or Hydraulic-Pneumatic — Choose Your Power Wisely

Yes, cordless is the future. But if your operators are holding that tool for a 10-hour shift, fighting TAKT-time delays, and already nursing sore wrists, that “cord-free future” might feel pretty heavy by lunchtime.

On the flip side, if your hydraulic-pneumatic setup is turning your shop floor into a tripping-hazard maze of air lines, you might be ready to trade that tether for some battery freedom.

And before you panic about repetitive-stress injuries — remember: a heavier tool on a balancer can sometimes be less damaging long-term than a lightweight tool that’s poorly matched to the operator.

Test Like You Mean It

Once you’ve narrowed down the power source, do more than the obligatory “feel test.”

❋ Set a few rivets — ideally your own rivets. (Yes, you can bring them!)

❋ Inquire about the strength of their warranty and maintenance support.

❋ Ask for a demo at your plant.

As someone who spent years running booths and demos, I can tell you — nothing made me happier than seeing someone test with their actual fasteners.

Why? Because that’s when the truth shows up.

Feel the recoil when the mandrel breaks. Notice whether the tool struggles, stalls, or hums right through.

Ask about traction power — but also know your rivet’s breakload.

And remember — this also applies when it’s a robot doing the work. You may remove the human, but you don’t necessarily remove the headaches. Even a $100,000 automated riveting cell can fail without proper understanding of the rivets themselves.

Badge Maxxing 101: Your Simple Checklist

  • Know your rivet type and material.

  • Know your required breakload.

  • Decide your power source before you hit the floor (but be open to innovation and accessories).

  • Bring sample rivets to test.

  • Ask reps about tool service, parts availability, and operator ergonomics.

  • And most of all — don’t let the giveaways distract you from the goal: improving your process.

The real prize isn’t a branded koozie — it’s finding a tool that saves time, reduces injuries, and makes your process about your product, not your problems.

Bonus: A Free Rivet Consultation

In the spirit of Badge Maxxing — and making the most of the 2025 Assembly Show — I’m launching my own promotion:

FREE 30-minute rivet consultation: October 15 – November 15

Send a photo and short description of your rivet issue to answers@positivelyriveting.com with promo code ASSEMBLY30 in the subject line.

We’ll set up a call and figure out what’s really going on — no sales pitch, no nonsense.

Bottom Line

Badge Maxxing isn’t about hitting every booth — it’s about asking better questions, understanding your process, and seeing through the polish to the real performance.

And when you show up with the confidence of knowing you’re asking the right questions, you don’t just collect business cards and brochures — you collect solutions.

See you in Rosemont... M
